Thomas Henderson, M.D. Copyright 2009 Eye Clinic of AustinThomas Henderson, M.D. in Austin was born in Wichita, Kansas.  In 1969, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge.  In 1973 he earned his Medical Doctorate from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas.  Dr. Henderson completed his residency in Ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston in 1979.  Dr. Henderson was certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1980 and has practiced Ophthalmology in Texas for thirty years.  He founded the Eye Clinic of Austin in 1982 and remains its President and C.E.O.  From 1995 to 2003, he served as Chief of Staff for HealthSouth Surgical Hospital (now Northwest Hills Surgical Hospital).  From 1988 to 1990 Dr. Henderson was Chief of Ophthalmology at St. David's Medical Center, and served in that capacity again from 1997 to 1999.  Dr. Henderson's professional experience includes expertise in cataract and refractive surgery, glaucoma care, and corneal transplant surgery, as well as comprehensive eye care.

Thomas Henderson, M.D. in Austin provides the highest level of care for cataract patients, including premium specialty lenses such as the Crystalens® to reduce the patient's need for reading glasses and the Alcon Toric Lens® to reduce Astigmatism and improve the quality of vision without glasses.  Dr. Henderson's refractive patients are offered Custom Blade-Free LASIK with the IntraLase® and the VISX Star S4-IR® or, if circumstances warrant, he offers either Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK), or Refractive Lensectomy with a premium lens implant.  For glaucoma patients Dr. Henderson offers newer, more sensitive diagnostic techniques and advanced therapies such as the Selective Laser Technology (SLT)® Laser and Ex-Press Mini Shunts®.  For patients with advanced or serious corneal problems, Dr. Henderson offers Penetrating Keratoplasty (PKP) for problems such as Keratoconus or corneal scars and he offers Descemet Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSAEK) for replacing damaged endothelial cells which have caused corneal swelling, clouding or decreased vision.

Dr. Henderson's thoroughness and clinical excellence has earned him the respect and trust of patients and peers.  Since 1997 Thomas Henderson, M.D. in Austin has been honored by being named annually one of the Best Doctors in America® (only about 5% of doctors in the U.S. are named Best Doctors in any given year).  Every other year Austin Monthly magazine publishes a cover article "Austin's Best Doctors" in which Austin honorees of Best Doctors in America are featured.  In 2009, Dr. Henderson was named a Texas Super Doctor (only 3% of all doctors in Texas are awarded this honor).  Similar to Austin Monthly's feature story, this award is covered annually as feature story by Texas Monthly usually called "Texas Super Doctors" - 'Top Doctors in Texas'.  Dr. Henderson is listed in the Consumers' Research Council of America's "Guide to America's Top Ophthalmologists".  This is an annual publication where CRCA compiles a list of top ophthalmologists throughout the United States by utilizing a point value system based on the doctors years of experience, training and education, and memberships in ophthalmological associations.  In 2007, Dr. Henderson who provides LASIK in Austin was honored by LaserVision® as a Top 100 Surgeon.  This award honors distinguished refractive surgery leaders for providing exceptional patient care and achieving LASIK excellence.  These refractive surgeons are revered for their dedication to improving lives through better vision.

 


Clayton L. Falknor, M.D.

Dr. Clayton Falknor in Austin, a fellowship-trained ophthalmologist, joined the Eye Clinic of Austin in 2010.  He was born in Houston, Texas and graduated with honors from the University of Texas at Austin in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering.  He worked for semiconductor producer Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) in Austin before entering the medical profession in 2001.  In 2005 he earned his Medical Doctorate form the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas.  He completed an internship in internal medicine at Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas in 2006.  He then returned to UT Southwestern where he completed their highly regarded residency in ophthalmology in 2009.  In the following year he completed a sub-specialty fellowship in cornea, external disease and refractive surgery at the renowned Duke University Eye Center in Durham, North Carolina.  In addition to providing the most up-to-date comprehensive eye care, Dr. Falknor has significant experience and clinical interest in corneal transplantation, including the newer partial thickness transplants (DSAEK and DALK), complex cataract surgery, presbyopic lens implantation (including ReSTOR™ and Crystalens™ implants), and astigmatism correction (toric lens implants, AK, LRI).  He specializes in the treatment of keratoconus, including implantation of Intacs™ corneal ring segments.  He also specializes in the most up-to-date techniques in refractive surgery, including LASIK, IntraLASIK and PRK.  Dr. Falknor is a member of the major national ophthalmology societies, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, and has presented research at their annual meetings.  Dr. Falknor now brings his world-class training to Austin and Central Texas.


Melanie Prosise, O.D.

Melanie Prosise Copyright Eye Clinic of AustinMelanie Prosise, O.D. in Austin joined Thomas Henderson, M.D. in Austin at the Eye Clinic of Austin in 2002.  She was born in Petersburg, Virginia and graduated with Bachelor in Science degree in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1996.  Dr. Prosise earned her Doctorate of Optometry from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 2001.  She has experience in a wide variety of eye care settings, including internships at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, the Thomas Lynch Pediatric Unit in Philadelphia, and the Jamaica Plain Veterans Administration Hospital in Boston.  In addition, Dr. Prosise received Honors for Clinical Excellence in Low Vision for her work at the Feinbloom Vision Rehabilitation Center.  Melanie Prosise, O.D. in Austin delights in caring for patients of all ages.  She is Texas Board Certified as a Therapeutic Optometrist and as an Optometric Glaucoma Specialist.  She has an interest, as well as significant experience, in caring for patients after cataract and refractive surgery.  She provides excellence in contact lens fitting, including soft and gas permeable contacts, specialty lenses for Astigmatism, bifocals and Keratoconus, as well as cosmetic and post surgical lenses.
